Future Gamez: Ask any non-gamer to name some video game characters and behind Mario and Sonic it's likely you'll hear the name Lara Croft. After some wonderfully successful games at the turn of the century, the franchise also spawned two successful Angelina Jolie starring feature films. In recent times though the franchise suffered with some poorly received games, but a shift from original developers Core Design in the UK, to American developers Crystal Dynamics saw some improvements, and now, in 2013 the company is completely rebooting the franchise - and it's a bloody fine effort too.

Tomb Raider is an action-adventure platform video game. Published by Square Enix, Tomb Raider is the fifth title developed by Crystal Dynamics in the Tomb Raider franchise. As the first entry in a new Tomb Raider continuity, the game is a reboot that emphasizes the reconstructed origins of the lead character Lara Croft. This Tomb Raider takes us places we havent been before but is this tomb really worth raiding?

WC - When it was first announced that Crystal Dynamics were going to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there was a mixture of scepticism and excitement. Lara Crofts origin story is one that hasnt really been explored and the characters development from a vulnerable young woman into a hardened survivor would have been a welcoming experience.
However, the term reboot made a lot of people anxious.Where it is one thing to make a prequel, it is another entirely to restart a franchise, potentially configuring the classical characteristics of one of the gamings most iconic heroines. Yet I am thrilled to report back that Crystal Dynamics have achieved something that looks gorgeous, plays brilliantly and has a story that redefines Lara while retaining what makes her Croft.

Aaron Ploof from Spy District writes:
"The days of innocently strolling through abandoned tombs while solving obscure puzzles are over. While the prior Tomb Raider games have featured a battle-hardened Lara who seems near indestructible, capable of in-humane feats, and devoid of emotion, this new approach is worlds away from what weve seen before. In Crystal Dynamics reboot of the famous action/adventure franchise, gamers will be given the opportunity to join Lara in her journey from naïve, vulnerable explorer to badass heroine tomb raider extraordinaire. Is this journey worth taking, you ask? Hell yes. Yes it is."

NGB: A survivor is born Crystal Dynamics tagline in reference to the iconic gaming archaeologist Lara Croft and their telling of her origin story in this latest Tomb Raider game. Perhaps, it also holds just as much relevance to the reinvention of the two-decade old series that rarely broke away from its original formula. Now, a cinematic epic with sprawling maps and intense action sequences; drawing inspiration from places it once inspired itself, Tomb Raider is back with the aim of showing us why merely surviving would be an aspiration that sells itself, considerably short.
